The Phoenix Mercury are the favored team in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals for betting.
The Phoenix Mercury’s high hopes for Game 1 of the WNBA Finals were dashed by a lopsided loss on Sunday.
Following a 91-77 loss to the Chicago Sky in their first game, the Mercury now face the task of rebounding in Game 2. The match is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m. Arizona time at Footprint Center.
ABC will nationally broadcast the best-of-five championship series as the Mercury looks to even the odds.
This is the first time sports betting has been available for the WNBA Finals in Arizona.
Mercury shines in Game 2 as favorites
In Wednesday’s Game 2, the Mercury are favored by four Arizona sports betting apps.
Caesars and DraftKings Sportsbook in Arizona are both giving the Mercury a 4-point advantage with an over/under of 168.5. Meanwhile, FanDuel in Arizona has the Mercury as 3.5-point favorites with the same over/under. TwinSpires in Arizona also has Phoenix as 3.5-point favorites with a -167 moneyline.
Caesars Sportsbook had the Mercury as 2.5-point favorites in Game 1 on Sunday.
The Chicago Sky emerged victorious in Game 1.
Sky, the underdog, triumphed over the Mercury in Game 1 with a 14-point victory, thanks to their outstanding shooting skills.
Chicago shot 52.9% from the field on Sunday, making 36 of 68 attempts, and they were perfect from the free-throw line, going 11 for 11. Stefanie Dolson, the Sky’s center, scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting in only 17 minutes coming off the bench.
Each of the Chicago starters scored at least 10 points, with Candace Parker leading the way by making 7 of 10 shots for a total of 16 points, in addition to 8 rebounds and 3 assists.
Kahleah Cooper, one of her teammates, was the leading scorer for the Sky with 21 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Chicago’s victory in Game 1 on Sunday was also attributed to their dominant performance on the boards, outrebounding the Mercury 34-29, and holding Phoenix to a shooting percentage of 43.5%.
Putting Griner back on the right path
The Sky successfully limited the offensive impact of former WNBA MVP Brittany Griner.
Griner, who had been shooting over 56% from the field prior to Game 1, struggled in the loss by missing eight of her 15 shot attempts and only managing to grab six rebounds.
Griner found it difficult to secure rebounds against the Sky’s tough defense, resulting in her coming up short of her usual playoff average of 9.3 rebounds per game.
Anticipate Mercury coach Sandy Brondello focusing the team’s offensive strategy on Griner and seasoned player Diana Taurasi in an effort to level the series at one win apiece.
During her postgame remarks on Sunday, Brondello reassured the media that the Mercury would come back rejuvenated and ready for Wednesday night’s game.
“We must come together and recharge. We have overcome similar obstacles before. This team is excelling,” Brondello stated. “We need to prepare for what’s ahead. Tuesday’s practice will be easy to keep our players energized. We will analyze the footage, practice on the court, and concentrate on enhancing certain aspects.”
