Fiesta Bowl Ranked as one of the Most Challenging Bowl Games for Travel in the Season
When Liberty and Oregon compete at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on New Year’s Day, they will be more than 2,100 miles from Liberty’s main campus in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Both teams playing in the Fiesta Bowl will have to travel a total of over 3,300 miles, with a 988-mile difference between the schools. This variance in distance makes it the 10th most uneven travel matchup out of all the bowl games happening from Saturday to early January.
Yengols.com analyzed the statistics of the longest bowl travelers this year in anticipation of Arizona sports betting.
Arizona betting apps have Washington listed at +750 odds as the least likely team to win the College Football Playoff national championship due to the extensive distance traveled. On the other hand, Michigan is the favored team with +185 odds.
Ranking of This Year’s Fiesta Bowl
The meeting between the Conference USA champions and one of the Pac-12’s top teams is less controversial compared to the 2023 Hawai’i Bowl, where Coastal Carolina and San José State face each other despite a significant 2,380-mile distance separating them.
The Oregon Ducks are heavily favored in the upcoming Fiesta Bowl game, with a projected 17.5-point spread on ESPN BET Arizona. Their current moneyline is at -800.
Oregon has not emerged victorious in a Fiesta Bowl game since their 35-17 win against Kansas State in 2012. Their most recent appearance at State Farm Stadium, the 2020 Fiesta Bowl, resulted in a 34-17 defeat at the hands of Iowa State.
The Ducks have won two out of three Fiesta Bowl games, their only bowl appearances in Arizona. On the other hand, Liberty has never played in a bowl game in Arizona until now, adding the Fiesta Bowl to their list of postseason destinations which includes the Boca Raton, LendingTree, and Cure bowls since joining the FBS in 2018.
