ASU hopes to revitalize football success with Kenny Dillingham at the helm.

ASU Looks To Reboot Football Success Under Kenny Dillingham
Fact Checked by Young Ruth

Kenny Dillingham, a Chandler native, is ushering in a new era for Arizona State football as he assumes control from Herm Edwards, who was dismissed last autumn.

Dillingham takes charge of a program that experienced its worst season in almost 30 years, with the Sun Devils ending the year with a 3-9 overall record and 2-7 in Pac-12 play.

ASU ended the season with only three wins, their lowest total since 1994 when they finished 3-8 under Bruce Snyder. This season was one of the worst in recent history, marking just the ninth time in the program’s 89-year history that they won three games or less.

Who will make a mark in Tempe this autumn?

With ASU getting ready to start the 2023 season against Southern Utah on Aug. 31, there are numerous question marks surrounding the starting lineup for both the offense and defense. Visit yengols.com for the latest Arizona sportsbook promotions.

Trenton Bourguet, the established starting quarterback, is poised to retain his position for the upcoming season. During the 2022 season, as a redshirt junior, he passed for 1,490 yards and 11 touchdowns while limiting interceptions to just six.

Jaden Rashada, a new freshman, is in the running for the starting quarterback role. According to 247 Sports, he is ranked as the seventh best QB in the class of 2023.

During spring practices, Drew Pyne, the former Notre Dame quarterback, is anticipated to see some playing time.

Following a standout season in which he racked up 1,192 yards and 16 touchdowns, fifth-year running back Xazavian Valladay is set to make the leap to the NFL. The task of filling his shoes is made even more difficult by the departure of backup Daniyel Ngata, who has transferred to Washington. With no returning running backs who surpassed 100 yards rushing last season, Arizona State University faces the challenge of identifying a new star player for the position.

ASU 2023 Football Schedule

  • Southern Utah had a record of 5-6 in FCS on August 31st.
  • Oklahoma State had a 7-6 record in the Big-12 conference on September 9th.
  • Fresno State had a 10-4 record in the Mountain West conference on September 16th.

  • The game scheduled for October 21 will be against Washington, which has a Pac-12 record of 11-2.
  • Washington State recorded a 7-6 record in the Pac-12 conference on October 28th.
  • The team will go up against Utah on November 4th, a team with a Pac-12 conference record of 10-4.
  • On November 11th, we will be facing off against UCLA, who currently holds a 9-4 record in the Pac-12 conference.
  • Oregon’s record in the Pac-12 is 10-3 as of November 18th.
  • Arizona had a record of 5-7 in the Pac-12 conference on November 25th.
  • In 2022, the team finished with a record of 90 wins and 64 losses, boasting a winning percentage of .584.

Daunting Schedule Awaits ASU in 2023

If Dillingham can effectively identify and utilize players in key positions, ASU stands a great chance of starting the season off strong, especially with four back-to-back home games.

Following that, ASU will encounter a difficult task as they strive for bowl eligibility, taking on California and Colorado in the inaugural year of Deion Sanders’ reign, followed by games against the Washington schools, Utah, and UCLA in a tight four-week stretch.

ASU is focused on winning back the Territorial Cup from Arizona in their final game of the 2023 season on Nov. 25, which will also mark the end of the regular season on their home turf.

Due to a fortunate mix of luck and overall team health, ASU is in a position to make its fourth bowl game appearance in the last six years.
