The potential impact of the Transfer Portal on the ASU Football Team in 2023

ASU Football: How Transfer Portal Could Impact Team in 2023
Fact Checked by Evans Fatimah

Kenny Dillingham’s tenure in Tempe has kicked off with a whirlwind of activity, as the newly appointed head coach of the Sun Devils wasted no time in securing commitments from 15 players in the NCAA transfer portal on the first day of signings.

Dillingham, the newest addition to ASU’s coaching staff tasked with reviving the team’s reputation as a regional powerhouse, is implementing a strategy that is gaining popularity in college football.

This approach heavily depends on using the portal to fill in any roster gaps for the team, in addition to recruiting traditional high school players to finalize the team.

The team relies heavily on transfers because Dillingham and his staff had a short window of time to recruit high school talent, with less than a month between their arrival and Wednesday’s signing day.

Yengols.com conducted an analysis of college football programs that signed at least 15 transfers in 2021 in order to give Arizona State University fans a better idea of what to expect from Dillingham’s recruits in the upcoming season.

Arizona sportsbooks will definitely be monitoring the situation closely.

What does success look like for ASU Football?

If Dillingham’s first ASU team excels, it could replicate USC’s rapid success or take a more gradual path like other mid-level Power Five programs such as Georgia Tech and Kansas, showing steady improvement over time.

According to 247 Sports, ASU’s 2023 high school recruiting class is ranked 73rd in the nation, while their transfer haul is ranked 14th.

ASU’s addition of former Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne, USC wide receiver Jake Smith, and multiple defensive players is anticipated to elevate their position in Arizona college football betting for 2023.

DraftKings Arizona and other sportsbooks are currently handling a high volume of college bowl odds, however, the Sun Devils are noticeably missing from the betting options.

The Sun Devils have shown some progress with their transfer portal additions, but it is still doubtful that they will make it to a bowl game next year.

The reason for ASU’s 3-9 record in 2022 is due to a number of factors.

The University of Arizona had a challenging season, ending with a 5-7 record that made it hard for Caesars Arizona and other sportsbooks to anticipate their performance. Despite their difficulties, the Wildcats finished strong by defeating ASU in a close 38-35 rivalry game.

Smart betting involves making slow progress.

Following a disappointing 3-9 season, the Sun Devils have the opportunity to boost their win percentage to .437 by incorporating the average increase of .187 from our data chart into their 2022 win percentage of .250. This could result in approximately five wins for the upcoming season.

However, attaining a 5-7 record would represent a notable improvement from the lackluster season under Herm Edwards in Tempe. This outcome would give Sun Devils fans hope for the program’s future under Dillingham.

Next fall, the ASU team is anticipated to get a boost from a talented Chandler native and four four-star high school transfers who will be joining the team.

Right now, Sun Devils fans are witnessing the success of Lincoln Riley and his team in Los Angeles and envisioning a similar future in Tempe.

Arizona has a chance for a successful repeat with upcoming non-conference matchups against Fresno State, Southern Utah, and potentially Oklahoma State at Sun Devil Stadium in 2023.

The Sun Devils should expect an increase in victories in the upcoming year with the addition of transfer portal talent, giving fans a reason to celebrate.
