Red-Hot Cougars

The hometown Cougars kicked off the season with a bang, defeating Pac-12 powerhouses Arizona (24-16) and Utah (26-17) in impressive fashion.

During those games, sophomore QB Jaren Hall has been a key contributor to BYU’s success, recording 347 yards and five touchdowns without any interceptions this season.

Hall set a new personal record in Saturday’s win against the Utes, rushing for 92 yards at an impressive average of 11.5 yards per carry.

This season, sophomore Tyler Allgeier has been teaming up with Hall in the backfield, consistently averaging 4.5 yards per carry.

Allgeier rushed for a total of 196 yards on 44 carries in the past two games, with 102 yards on 27 carries in the win against Utah and 94 yards on 17 carries in the previous game against the Wildcats.

The dynamic duo of sophomore players is determined to guide BYU to victory over ASU for the first time since 1995 on Saturday night.

Sun Devils’ first test

Arizona State’s strong start to the season has been tempered by the fact that it has mostly faced weaker opponents.

The Sun Devils’ wins against a lower division team (Southern Utah) and a struggling Mountain West opponent (UNLV) do not provide a true measure of the team’s ability to face tough challenges.

On Saturday, when junior QB Jayden Daniels and his teammates take the field, we will gain a deeper insight into the team.

This year, Daniels has been impressive with 307 passing yards and two touchdowns, along with 165 rushing yards for the Sun Devils.

Daniels is looking to build on his standout freshman season as he enters his sophomore year. In his first year, he threw for 2,943 yards and 17 touchdowns while only throwing two interceptions. He also led the Sun Devils to a victory in the Sun Bowl.

He will face a tough test against a BYU pass rush that has held opponents to an average of 383 yards per game this season and recorded six sacks.

On Saturday night, either the Cougars or Sun Devils will come out on top in their first meeting of the 21st century.

The Cougars handed the Sun Devils a 26-6 defeat in their recent matchup in Provo on September 12, 1998, resulting in the Sun Devils falling from 14th in the national rankings to being unranked.

The Sun Devils couldn’t recover from their setback and finished the year with a 5-6 record, missing the postseason for the first time since 1994.

It is still uncertain if the ASU team will face a similar decline this year, but more information about the Sun Devils’ future will be revealed once the game kicks off in the foothills of the Wasatch Range on Saturday night.
