Will Sun Devils be able to emulate the recent trend of bowl-ineligible teams?

Can Sun Devils Follow Trend of Recent Bowl Ineligible Teams?
Fact Checked by Young Ruth

On Sunday, the Arizona State Sun Devils made a decisive move to distance themselves from the Herm Edwards coaching era by announcing a self-imposed, one-year ban on bowl games as a result of an ongoing NCAA recruiting investigation.

The inquiry into Edwards’ recruitment strategies in the 2020 COVID-19 season ultimately hindered Coach Kenny Dillingham from guiding his team to a bowl game during his debut year in Tempe.

The inspiration behind yengols.com was to examine how recent college football teams have performed during one-year postseason bans and its potential impact on Arizona sports betting for the Sun Devils. The analysis involved looking at the final standings of the last 10 football programs, starting from Miami and USC in 2011.

Arizona sports betting apps have given ASU the second-lowest championship odds among Pac-12 teams, with odds of +15000.

What ASU’s History of Bowl Bans Reveals

Unlike other bowl-banned teams, the 2023 Sun Devils have modest expectations for the season, with a preseason win total over/under of 4.5 at Caesars Sportsbook Arizona. This puts them in a similar performance category as Missouri in 2019 and Ole Miss in 2018 and 2017, which had a combined record of 17-19 during those seasons.

People outside of Tempe were surprised to think that Dillingham and his team could replicate the success of USC in 2011 or Ohio State in 2012. It is more realistic to compare ASU’s future success to teams like the Tigers and Rebels rather than the Buckeyes and Trojans.

Over the last decade, the 10 teams that missed a bowl game have a combined record of 75-45 (.625). Nine of these teams won at least six games during their bowl absence, with four teams – the UNC Tar Heels, Penn State Nittany Lions, Buckeyes (in 2012), and the Trojans (in 2011) – winning at least eight games.

As of now, it is confirmed that the Sun Devils will be watching as 86 teams compete in one of the 43 college football bowl games from home, regardless of Arizona State’s performance in the 2023 season. The season starts at 9 p.m. on Thursday against Southern Utah, with major sportsbook operators like FanDuel not currently offering betting lines for the game.
