Arizona bettors can now place wagers on the Duel in the Desert for the first time.

For First Time, Arizona Bettors Can Wager on Duel in the Desert

This week, the historic rivalry west of the Rockies returns with the exciting addition of legal sports betting in Arizona.

The Territorial Cup football game between Arizona and Arizona State has been a tradition since 1946, with occasional matchups dating back to 1899. This year’s game, scheduled for Saturday, holds special significance as the first one following the legalization of sports betting in the state in September.

The game has had its moments of success and failure, such as last year’s 70-7 defeat to the Sun Devils in Tucson, which set a new record for the highest number of points scored in the 84-game history of the series.

Following a major defeat, the Arizona Wildcats made the decision to part ways with coach Kevin Sumlin and instead hired Jedd Fisch, a former UCLA offensive coordinator and NFL veteran, as their new head coach in Tucson.

348 days later, the Wildcats and Sun Devils face off once more in Tempe. This time, the visitors are seeking revenge for their defeat in last year’s one-sided match.

Their chance will come at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Sun Devil Stadium in Arizona, televised on the Pac-12 Network.

ASU overwhelmingly favored to win on Saturday

Due to their 1-10 record this season, Fisch’s team is not receiving much support from the top sports betting apps in Arizona, in contrast to ASU’s 7-4 record.

Arizona’s FanDuel Sportsbook has the Sun Devils as the biggest favorite with a spread of -20.5 (-106), while DraftKings Sportsbook is close behind at -20 (-115), and BetMGM has the home team favored by -19.5 (-110).

ASU is the clear favorite for a moneyline bet, with odds of -1100 on BetMGM Arizona, -1375 on DraftKings Arizona, and -1500 on FanDuel Sportsbook Arizona. If you’re feeling lucky and want to bet on the Wildcats, BetMGM Arizona has them at +700.

The over/under for Saturday’s game differs slightly between the three sportsbooks in Arizona. BetMGM has set it at 52.5 total points with odds of -105, while DraftKings has it at 53 points with odds of -110, and FanDuel at 53.5 points with odds of -110.

The spokesperson for BetMGM Arizona anticipates a notable rise in betting on the Arizona-Arizona State game this weekend, driven by the fierce rivalry and the approaching holiday weekend. This surge in activity is expected to exceed the usual betting levels observed on a typical Saturday.

Adam Pullen, the assistant director of trading at Caesars Sportsbook, is expecting a busy weekend ahead.

Pullen stated that with sports betting now legal across Arizona, the upcoming Territorial Cup is predicted to see record-breaking amounts of bets. Although one team is favored to win, he believes the Wildcats will put in the effort to recover from their recent defeat to the Sun Devils.

Arizona is hoping to end their losing streak against ASU.

The Wildcats face a challenging challenge as they aim to end their four-game losing streak against their top rivals.

Excluding the 63-point loss from last year, Arizona has been competitive in their last three defeats, losing by scores of 42-30 in 2017, 41-40 in 2018, and 24-14 in 2019.

In 2016, the Wildcats dominated ASU 56-35 by relying heavily on their running game in the second half to secure their most recent victory in the series.

ASU currently leads the all-time series with a record of 43-40-1. The team is aiming to continue their longest winning streak in the series, which occurred with nine consecutive wins from 1965 to 1973.

Back in the beginning of the season, the Wildcats broke their 20-game losing streak by beating Cal in Tucson with a score of 10-3 on November 6. This victory put an end to the program’s longest losing streak in the nation at that time.

Arizona has surpassed expectations in college football betting this season by achieving a 6-5 record against the spread. Before their recent loss to Washington State, the Wildcats had covered the spread in four consecutive games.

Arizona State has failed to cover the spread in 7 of their 11 games this season, only managing to do so twice when favored by double digits.
