Arizona Downs Joins Turf Paradise in Receiving State Limited Operator License

Two of the three horse racing tracks in Arizona have been granted limited operator’s licenses for sports betting, making them part of the top 10 recipients in the state.

Arizona Downs Racetrack in Prescott Valley has been approved for a license to start offering retail sports betting, becoming the second track in the state to do so alongside Turf Paradise in Phoenix, which was the first to receive a limited license in late January.

The Arizona Department of Gaming released the full list in response to a public records request from yengols.com on Tuesday. Initially, the ADG had indicated that it did not plan to officially disclose the names of the limited licensees to the public.

The limited licenses allow racetrack enclosures or off-track betting locations with Arizona Department of Racing permits to provide in-person sports betting, provided they are situated at a minimum distance of five miles from tribal gaming establishments, event wagering facilities, or other restricted event wagering operators.

As part of the initial $10,000 license fee, applicants are required to pay a $1,000 application fee. In addition, there is a $5,000 annual renewal fee.

License holders are not allowed to use casino Arizona betting apps.

Who qualified for a restricted operator’s license?

Turf Paradise’s application for a mobile sports betting license was rejected by the ADG. The track then took legal action by filing a complaint in Maricopa County Superior Court in August, but the case was ultimately dismissed.

A news release from the department stated that on Tuesday, it was revealed that eight of the ten licensees for off-track betting locations, including two within the Phoenix city limits, must complete the entire licensing process and receive approval from the ADG in order to conduct event wagering.

Rillito Downs in Tucson was the sole racetrack facility that was not granted a license. In the previous month, the facility notified yengols.com that it had applied for a license from the ADG.

Representatives from Rillito Downs declined to provide a comment in response to the request.
