The total handle for Arizona online sportsbooks saw a double-digit decline in May as betting activity decreased significantly due to the late spring doldrums.
Overall, the Arizona sports betting apps market saw a 10% drop in handle, decreasing from $512.877 million in April to $461.450 million in May.
The figure is ranked sixth in the nation for the month, with New York ($1.27 billion), New Jersey ($766.4 million), Illinois ($764.6 million), Nevada ($562 million), and Pennsylvania ($493.4 million) leading the way.
In Arizona, a new record was set for the amount of wagering taxes collected in a single month, reaching $4.1 million. This surpassed the previous record of $3.1 million set in November.
Overall, the sports betting market in Arizona saw a drop in handle over two months, falling from a high of $690.970 million in March.
Ted Vogt, director of the Arizona Department of Gaming, commended the revenue report from Friday, citing it as evidence of the state’s impressive performance compared to others nationally.
Vogt announced in a press release that the event wagering industry in Arizona is prospering, with over $460 million wagered and over $4 million in privilege fees collected in May. Since the legalization of event wagering, the state has generated approximately $30 million in privilege and licensing fees.

For only the second time, FanDuel Sportsbook Arizona surpassed DraftKings Sportsbook Arizona in performance.
In May, the operator from New York outperformed the 18 Arizona sportsbooks, generating a mobile handle of $148.709 million. DraftKings Sportsbook Arizona came in a close second with a total of $141.062 million for the month.
The operator from Boston consistently ranked as the top sports betting operator in the state every month, except for February when FanDuel Sportsbook earned $142.445 million and DraftKings Sportsbook earned $131.653 million.
Other than the top two competitors in the state’s market, the rankings remained unchanged in May. BetMGM Arizona placed third with $84.195 million, followed by Caesars Sportsbook Arizona at $47.504 million and Barstool Sportsbook at $14.552 million.
After the top five in the state’s rankings, WynnBET Arizona followed with $8.868 million, Rush Street Interactive/BetRivers Arizona with $4.228 million, SuperBook Sports with $2.422 million, and BetFred with $1.211 million.
Unibet Sportsbook Arizona and Hard Rock Interactive were the top performers in terms of handle in May, coming closest to reaching the $1 million mark. However, the remaining nine operators fell short of achieving this milestone.
