The Gila River Indian Community is planning to open its fourth casino in the Phoenix area.

Arizona’s expansion of its gambling options has resulted in the development of a new casino located on the outskirts of Phoenix.

The Gila River Indian Community has revealed its intention to build a new casino located south of Chandler, close to the intersection of Gilbert Road and Hunt Highway. This upcoming casino will be the fourth one owned by the Gila River tribe.

Azcentral.com reports that the tribe’s updated agreement with the state permits the establishment of a fourth casino. Presently, the tribe runs casinos in Wild Horse Pass and Lone Butte in Chandler, as well as Vee Quiva in Laveen. The construction of the new casino is expected to last between one and a half to two years, with an approximate cost of $100 million.

As stated in a report on azcentral.com, the new website will feature games permitted by the revised compact, such as additional table games and the introduction of sports betting in Arizona.

In a press release, Gila River Indian Community Governor Stephen Roe Lewis announced that the opening of a fourth casino will not only boost revenue, security, and critical services for community members, but also generate hundreds of job opportunities that will positively impact the Community. Lewis expects that a significant number of these new positions will be filled by Community members.

As per reports, the Community Council of the tribe gave approval for the casino on June 18, as well as allocated a budget for the project’s design and construction.

Gila River is expected to work with BetMGM Arizona for sports betting, although an official announcement has not been made.

Legislation & Compact Signed

Sports betting was approved by the Arizona state legislature on April 12, and Governor Doug Ducey signed the bill into law three days later, officially legalizing sports wagering in the state.

The U.S. Department of Interior officially approved the amended Arizona tribal-state gaming compact on May 12, marking the finalization of the agreement aimed at modernizing gaming. Governor Ducey and tribal leaders of the state negotiated and signed the compact.

Sports betting in Arizona is scheduled to begin on September 9, coinciding with the start of the 2021 NFL season.
