It appears that Arizonans have a preference for modern holiday films, with four out of the top five movies being from the 21st century rather than the traditional classics.

Arizona residents show a strong preference for “The Polar Express” compared to critics, with 29% of search queries in the state focusing on the 2004 film despite its 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Coming in second in the holiday movie rankings of 1990 was “Home Alone,” with 26% of searches, trailing behind “The Polar Express” by three percentage points.”

In the year 2000, the cult classic film directed by Chris Columbus and featuring Macaulay Culkin outperformed two other popular 21st century favorites, “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” and “Elf.”

The modern version of Dr. Seuss’ beloved holiday story became a popular search topic in Arizona, accounting for 18% of all holiday film searches. In comparison, “Elf” claimed the fourth spot with 14% of searches.

Coming in fifth place is the 1983 comedy movie, “A Christmas Story,” which saw a spike in popularity to 13% of all holiday film searches in Arizona after breaking free from the pole.

Of the five Arizona Christmas films, only “A Christmas Story” was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry.

Nonetheless, it is unnecessary to exclaim “What the Elf?” since Arizona’s list will probably change as residents’ movie preferences evolve.
