The current state of the Arizona sports betting market
After SaharaBets launched on Wednesday, 14 out of the 18 Arizona sportsbooks that were approved by the Department of Gaming in August are now operating, either online or through retail locations.
The final contestants in the competition are Bally’s Arizona, working with the Phoenix Mercury; Golden Nugget, in partnership with the Hualapai Tribe; Digital Gaming, allied with the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe; and Navajo Nation, who has not yet disclosed their gaming partner.
If tribes and licensed sports teams fail to start operations within 180 days of the start of sports betting on September 9, they may risk forfeiting their licenses back to the state if they don’t launch by March 8.
A representative from Bally’s Arizona confirmed to yengols.com that the company will meet the deadline and be operational.
Attempts to reach out to the Navajo Nation, Hualapai Tribe, Golden Nugget, San Juan Paiute Tribe, and Digital Gaming were unsuccessful as they did not respond.
Who is authorized to operate in Arizona?
In August, a total of 18 licenses were issued to 10 tribes and eight professional sports teams.
Tribes participating in the 2021 compact are permitted to run retail sportsbooks on their tribal lands without requiring a license. In recent years, the Ak-Chin Indian Community, Gila River Indian Community, Tohono O’odham, and Pascua Yaqui Tribe have all opened retail sportsbooks.
