Odds for Ketel Marte’s Next Team

Fact Checked by Washington Erick

  • The Diamondbacks have failed to replicate their success from last season’s World Series campaign.
  • Here are the likelihoods of GM Mike Hazen possibly trading Ketel Marte before the July deadline.
  • Next month, the Seattle Mariners (+400) are expected to express interest in Marte.

In 67 games played this year, Arizona Diamondbacks veteran Ketel Marte has been a standout performer in the infield, hitting 14 home runs, driving in 37 runs, and posting an impressive OPS+ of 146. He also boasts a 4.0 WAR, showcasing his valuable contributions to the team.

Since the D-backs are currently 8.5 games behind in the NL West and one game out of the third and final Wild Card spot, GM Mike Hazen may opt to rebuild at the deadline. As a result, the team could potentially trade away longtime starters such as Marte.

Now that sports betting is legal in Arizona, Hazen and his team will likely be busy fielding calls as the July 30 trade deadline approaches. Depending on the results in the Valley by the end of the summer, Arizona may be considering either buying or selling.

Marte is signed through 2027 with an annual salary of $16.6 million for the next two years, decreasing to $14.6 million in 2027. Additionally, there is a $13 million team option for the 2028 MLB season with a $3 million buyout.

Yengols.com has compiled some speculative odds on potential MLB teams interested in Marte this season, with the D-backs currently favored to keep the 30-year-old player.

Who Will Land Marte?

It appears improbable that Hazen would entertain the idea of parting ways with such a valuable asset to the franchise at this moment. Arizona has been on a winning streak, securing victories in six of their last 10 games and currently holding a record of 33-36 (.478) for the season. They are trailing behind the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals by just one game for the last playoff spot in the NL.

We still believe the D-backs are the top choice to land Marte after the trade deadline, with -150 odds. Other teams in the mix include the Seattle Mariners (+400), Kansas City Royals (+750), and Minnesota Twins (+900), all of whom have promising farm systems and are on the upswing.

Marte relocated from Seattle to Phoenix after joining the Mariners as an international free agent on Aug. 13, 2010. He was subsequently traded with pitcher Taijuan Walker for Jean Segura, Mitch Haniger, and Zac Curtis on Nov. 23, 2016.

The 30-year-old player has amassed 28.4 WAR in 1,035 MLB games and may have the chance to come back to the Northwest. Nevertheless, it would likely take a substantial number of prospects to persuade Hazen to trade his All-Star infielder.

The Royals, with a current record of 40-30, are unexpectedly in the playoff race and are looking for a replacement for starting second baseman Michael Massey, who is on the injured list with a back injury. Massey had contributed 1.2 WAR in 29 games this season.

Include the Twins in the conversation as they are currently trailing the Royals with a 37-32 record and are also looking for a middle infielder to complement Carlos Correa. With this addition, the list of teams that may pursue a player like Marte before the July 30 deadline is complete.
